Slats in the fence were to keep YOU and ME from seeing how our taxes are spent.

March 14, 2013

[This post was originally typed in June/July of 2012.  I’m just now getting around to posting it, but it couldn’t have come at a better time.  Our Police Department had just purchased two Hummers at the time, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the reason the slats were put in was to hide the Hummers.]

At the last CCPD budget workshop, I asked Chief Cannaday why he put slats in the fence to obscure the view of residents of the vehicular assets of the Police Department.  I was particularly interested in the answer to this question after the Chief had said during the last Town Hall meeting that his goals were to increase and improve transparency into the operations of the Police Department.

The Chief laughed at this question, as presumably, he saw the humor in the situation as did I.  The Chief indicated that the number of calls to the PD about the number of cars and why, had become a distraction and the City Manager had said to put the slats in the fence to cut down on the number of calls.

The City Manager then spoke up and added that, although the calls about the cars had been a motivating factor, that it was also a matter of security and “Officer Safety”.  Security, because the tax-payers, aka “potential perpetrators of insidious acts” might know what the Police had in their vehicles.  Apparently, only some of the officers are allowed to carry the AR-15’s, and we wouldn’t want the potential criminals that the tax payers are, to have such knowledge.

It was all I could do to keep from laughing.  “Security” and “Officer Safety” are the magic words to bypass rationality and property rights and turn into a zombie and just blindly approve any expenditure of funds or restrictions of freedom.

Frankly, this is just a bunch of mindless drivel.  It’s yet another example of the government just doing what they want without having any responsibility to justify the actions or abrogations of freedom. Just say the magic words, wave your hands and unleash the dollars. “These aren’t the droids you’re looking for.”  I mean, “We’re the Government and we know better than you how to spend your money. Shut up plebe!”
