No Contest

March 17, 2013

Have you ever gotten a ticket and seen this as one of the options for your plea? This is one of the best defenses you can take.  The gist of the plea is that you are not guilty, but it can’t be worth the time and energy and money to defend yourself because you know the state is going to win and you’re just going to be urinating in the wind.

A couple of years ago, when I went in to make a plea on a traffic ticket, I heard the judge tell everyone that no one should plead “No Contest”, but to plea guilty and just be done with it.  I’m sure that works well for the judge who is then able to show convictions, but it does not safeguard your rights at all.  This is the kind of thing that makes me despise our system of government, over-policing and the explosion of stupid laws by legislatures.

Of course, the standard legal disclaimer must accompany this post.  I’m not an attorney, I don’t even play one on TV and I would have no idea if this would ever apply to you.  Consult an attorney that YOU paid for to protect your rights. I suspect that attorney will advise you to plea “No Contest”.

Yeah, as despicable as our system of government is, it is still the best in the world … and that ain’t saying much! 🙂
