“Keeping the weapons off the streets”

March 23, 2013

During our conversation, Chief Canaday (over a year ago) mentioned that any firearms that come into the Police department are destroyed.  His justification was that the police department has them melted down so that “are not returned to the street”.

I must confess, I was fairly taken aback by this wanton destruction of property.  Why wouldn’t they be sold and the proceeds distributed to victims?   Why couldn’t they be auctioned off to residents of the city who might like a firearm to better protect their family members or place of business?  Why is the Chief not putting these implements of freedom back on the street where they can have the most likelihood to repel criminals and decrease crimes against a person or their property?  This kind of mentality is very disappointing in our head law enforcement officer.

While I try very hard to be positive about our police force, I am very disappointed in this policy and even more so by the attitude on display about firearms.  This mentality is exactly the kind of thing that should never be in local law enforcement.  That it is, has been greatly disturbing to me.

Sounds like a left coast import to me. Maybe a Bloomberg wannabe.
