Texas mayor drops gun during council meeting, claims it was just a pellet gun

April 15, 2014

“The rules of the council chambers state there are “no weapons allowed” inside, even for those who possess a valid concealed carry permit. But after Isbell accidentally dropped his concealed firearm, it was evident he was breaking the rules and some residents are irritated at the hypocrisy.”

Why would residents be irritated at the hypocrisy?  I marvel that people still put up with this kind of crap.  Why should the government be allowed to dictate where one has the right to defend themselves?  If you are a fool with no regard for your personal security besides a hopeful wish that the police will protect you, I’m fine with that, but don’t expect me to think that’s a great idea.

In my never to be humble opinion, there should be no limits to where anyone can defend themselves.  My right to self-defense comes from God.  It’s delineated in the Constitution, but even if the Constitution were amended  to eliminate the second amendment, the right to self-defense is one of the “unalienable rights” mentioned in the Declaration.  It’s non-negotiable.

So, how should this situation be handled?

First remove the restriction on weapons.  It’s a stupid thing anyway.  I can wound someone critically or even kill them with a pencil or pen.  Who gets to decide what’s a weapon?  It’s just a stupid restriction.  I’ve argued this before when the Watauga Library put such verbiage in their policies.

Second, if the weapon were real and he lied about it, perhaps he should be chastised or disciplined for lying about it.  As a CHL holder, he could be prosecuted for failing to conceal his weapon.  Frankly, I can’t support this option because of the unalienable right to self-defense.

Third, the council should be encouraged to eliminate any rules where there are differences between “the rulers” and “the plebes”.  There should be no special privileges for anyone.
